Put your hand into a pile of 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel and it moves around your fingers. Nothing catches, nothing digs in, and the whole heap shifts when you lean on it. That single property, rounded instead of crushed, decides everything about how this stone behaves in a Pocono yard, from where it can be used to how it has to be held in place.

3/8" Natural Pea Gravel in the hand: rounded, sorted, chickpea-sized

The stones run to roughly three eighths of an inch, small, smooth and naturally rounded rather than crushed to shape. Colors run through tans, creams, grays and browns with the occasional red, and because the color belongs to the stone itself rather than to a coating, it does not chip off or fade out the way dyed material does.

The contrast with crushed stone is in the hand: angular chips wedge and stay wedged, while rounded stone rolls. That is what makes it pleasant to walk on and also what makes it travel.

The muddy strip by the back door this stone gets bought to fix

The common order out of the glaciated northeast is for the strip of ground nobody can grow grass on. Under a roof drip line, beside a patio, across a shaded side yard where boots have killed the turf, a bare strip turns to soup every time the snow melts and stays that way for weeks. Pea gravel over a prepared bed takes the mud out of it: water goes through the layer instead of standing on the surface, and there is nothing to track into the house.

The same reasoning covers the other jobs it does well: a downspout landing, a swale dressing, a garden path, a play area, a permeable patio.

How rounded stone behaves on till that stays wet into May

The ground through the northeast corner is stony till, often with a dense slow-draining layer not far below the surface, so water perches above that layer from autumn until late spring and snow hangs on well into the season. Two things follow for a pea gravel job.

First, the layer will drain, but only as far as the ground beneath allows. Gravel over saturated till is a wet gravel bed. Where the ground stays that wet, put the stone over an open base and give the water an outlet.

Second, repeated freeze-thaw moves anything loose. Frost commonly reaches 36 to 42 inches here, set by each municipality, and the top few inches freeze and thaw over and over through the winter. A contained bed of rounded stone comes through that fine. An uncontained one spreads a little further into the lawn every spring.

Edging first, then fabric, then depth

Work in that order and the job lasts.

Edging. Set the boundary before anything else. Steel, aluminum, timber, brick or a set stone curb all hold a line, and a bed dug an inch or two below the surrounding grade helps as well. This is not optional with rounded stone.

Excavation, base and fabric. Strip the turf and topsoil, shape the ground to a slight fall, and lay a permeable geotextile so soil and stone do not mix, which is what turns a clean bed into a dirty one. On wet till, add a compacted layer of 2A Modified or an open layer of clean stone beneath that.

Depth. Two inches is the working figure for a decorative bed or a path, matching the calculator's landscaping guide, and three is the most you want where people walk. Deeper and every footstep sinks, since nothing holds the stones against each other.

A paver patio, a dry creek line and a fire pit ring

Three jobs, and the first one is a trap.

A paver patio base. Not this material. Rounded stone cannot be compacted into a stable layer, so pavers set over it rock and settle. The base is compacted 2A modified with a screeded Screenings bedding course, and pea gravel is then an option for the joints or for the border outside the paved area.

A dry creek bed. A good fit, usually combined with larger material. Line the channel, place River Rock or larger cobbles along the sides and the deepest part, then fill between them with pea gravel. In a channel that carries real flow after a storm, the small stone will move, so keep it out of the fast center.

A fire pit surround. One of the better uses. It is stable enough for chairs if it is shallow and contained, it will not burn, and it drains after rain so the ring is usable the next morning. Keep it thin, edge it firmly, and leave a gap of bare ground or stone slabs immediately around the pit itself.

Yards for a 30 foot creek line and a fire pit surround

Hypothetical examples. Square feet times depth in feet, divided by 27, gives cubic yards. This site publishes pea gravel at about 2,800 lb per cubic yard, or 1.40 tons per yard; road base runs about 3,000 lb and screenings about 2,900 lb.

Example jobMaterialWorkingCubic yardsTons
Fire pit surround 16 ft x 14 ft at 2 in, less a 5 ft pitPea Gravel224 sq ft less 19.6 sq ft = 204 sq ft x 0.167 ft = 34 cu ft; 34 / 271.31.8
Dry creek line 30 ft x 3 ft at 3 inPea Gravel90 sq ft x 0.25 ft = 22.5 cu ft; 22.5 / 270.81.2

The circular pit area comes from radius times radius times 3.14, so 2.5 x 2.5 x 3.14 gives 19.6 square feet. As a check, one cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches and 108 at 3. Put your own measurements through the pea gravel calculator before setting a quantity.

What the first winter and the first mowing season do to it

Expect a little migration in year one, mostly at the edges and on any slope, which a light spring raking puts right. Leaves are the real maintenance item, since rotting leaf litter fills the voids and starts weeds; a blower on a low setting clears them without lifting much stone, and hosing the bed brings the color back up. The one thing that shortens a bed's life is a mower throwing stone out of it week after week, which a hard edge fixes on the day the bed is built.

Picking a drop spot rounded stone will not roll off

Choose the quantity and a delivery date on this page. Delivery is worked out at checkout from your ZIP code, and the truck needs a firm level spot with room to reverse and clearance overhead. With rounded stone the level part matters more than usual, since a pile tipped on a slope keeps spreading downhill.

Have the edging in and the bed excavated before the load arrives, because moving pea gravel twice is easy and moving it three times is not. If access is tight past a gatepost or the drive is steep, talk to Pennsylvania Rock Supply through Contact before the date.
