Along the Delaware River lowland there is a narrow strip where the ground is loose sand and gravel rather than rock, and it tempts people into digging their own. The trouble starts at the mixer. Bank sand carries clay and silt through it, and clay in a concrete mix works against the cement while silt in a bedding layer holds water where you wanted it drained. Washed sand is the same material with those two problems taken out, and around here it leaves the yard mostly for footings, trench lines and leveling courses.
Coarse, washed, and without the clay that comes out of a bank
What arrives is coarse-grained sand that has been washed to remove clay, silt and organic debris. Run it through your fingers and it feels gritty rather than soft, and the grain sizes are consistent enough to behave the same way on Tuesday as they did on Monday, which is what a concrete mix or a bedding layer needs.
The coarse texture is also why it flows into gaps and around shapes. Poured into a trench it works its way around the underside of a pipe and into the corners instead of bridging over voids the way a coarse aggregate would.
Order washed sand for concrete, bedding and a leveling course
Choose washed sand when the job is one of these:
- Concrete and mortar. It is the fine aggregate in a mix for a footing, a slab or a wall, and the washing is precisely what makes it suitable for structural work.
- Pipe, conduit and cable bedding. It surrounds and supports a buried line evenly without pressing hard points into the coating, and it is the standard answer for a utility trench.
- Leveling and grading. It fills shallow low areas and makes an even setting surface before something else is built on it.
- Trench and post-hole backfill. It compacts in confined spaces where getting a compactor into a corner is impossible.
A wall drain, a pond edge and a site entrance are not sand jobs
Three requests come in regularly where sand is the wrong material, and it is worth being blunt about all three.
Retaining wall backfill. The zone behind a wall has to drain freely and stay drained. Sand holds water and adds load against the back of the wall when saturated, which is the opposite of what is wanted. Use 2B Stone behind the wall with a drain at the base of it.
A pond or shoreline edge. Moving water takes sand away, and the only question is how many storms it takes. Edges are armored with RipRap sized to the job, sometimes over a filter layer, or dressed with Large River Rock where the water is calm.
A construction or site entrance. The point is to knock mud off a tire on big open rock. Sand at a gate becomes the mud. That job is #4 Crushed Stone or ballast.
Bedding a trench line under a lowland yard
Trench work is where most of this sand goes on a domestic property, and the sequence matters more than the quantity. Cut the trench to grade, take out soft pockets, then lay a bed of sand along the bottom so the line sits on a continuous cushion rather than on the high points of the excavation. Lay the pipe, then bring sand up around and over it in layers, working it under the haunches with a bar before anything heavier goes in.
Above that surround, the rest of the trench is backfilled with the excavated material or with stone, depending on what runs over the top. One local caution is worth adding: storm runoff across built-up lowland ground is managed under municipal stormwater rules, and a sand-filled trench running downhill can become an unintended flow path. Think about where water entering that trench is going to come out.
How much weight sand can be asked to carry
Sand is a bedding and leveling material, not a structural one. It supports evenly across an area but it does not lock the way an angular graded stone does, and under a point load it moves. A patio bedded on an inch of sand over a properly compacted base lasts for years. The same patio bedded on four inches of sand, with no base, ruts under a chair leg and dips under a table by the second summer.
So the working rule is thin over strong. Compacted 2A Modified or an open stone layer carries the load, and the sand above it does nothing except make the surface level and give the units something to seat into. Frost through this part of the state cycles repeatedly at shallow depth even though the frost line itself is shallower here than in the mountains, and a thick saturated sand layer under pavers is what heaves when it freezes.
Yards for a 36 foot trench and a slab pour
Hypothetical examples, worked through. Cubic feet divided by 27 gives cubic yards. This site publishes mason and washed sand at about 2,700 lb per cubic yard, which comes out at 1.35 tons per yard; clean three-quarter stone runs about 2,800 lb, or 1.40 tons.
| Example job | Material | Working | Cubic yards | Tons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trench bedding 36 ft x 2 ft wide at 6 in | Washed Sand | 72 sq ft x 0.5 ft = 36 cu ft; 36 / 27 | 1.3 | 1.8 |
| Leveling course under a 16 ft x 12 ft slab at 1 in | Washed Sand | 192 sq ft x 0.083 ft = 16 cu ft; 16 / 27 | 0.6 | 0.8 |
| Setting bed for a 12 ft x 10 ft paver area at 1 in | Washed Sand | 120 sq ft x 0.083 ft = 10 cu ft; 10 / 27 | 0.4 | 0.5 |
| Drainage zone behind a 30 ft wall, 1 ft x 3.5 ft | 2B Stone | 105 cu ft; 105 / 27 | 3.9 | 5.4 |
A cubic yard of sand covers about 324 square feet at an inch and 54 square feet at 6 inches, which is a useful check on any answer that looks surprising. Measure your own areas and run them through the sand calculator, which carries the same weight and handles several areas in one go.
A drop spot that will not lose half the pile to a thunderstorm
Sand is the material most easily damaged between the truck and the job. A heavy summer storm across the lowlands will wash an uncovered pile into the street and a windy week will take the top off it, so pick a spot on hard standing, keep a tarp handy, and plan to use it rather than store it. A pile left on grass also kills the grass underneath faster than stone does.
